padding isn't the problem ok so what it is.. Once you're done adding all the elements, set the spinner to the value you want, then render. A padding of 8 will prevent bleeding for 3 levels of downsampling. I've done most of the character, and just need to finish the high res sculpt, render to texture, and draw the textures. Usually 2 is a good value. I upgraded to Vista 64 and Max 2008 64 and my problem went away.
