I changed the sensor and the speedo still did not work but the CEL went out. It is a crying scandal that you cannot take the time or be bothered to build us, what sanity knows we need, an odorless and noiseless staid little electric brougham. I also done a couple of mk4 's that have had a broken wire inside the loom under the battery causing an intermittent feed fault to the sensor.

It's related to coolant leaking onto a wiring harness and corroding it. Check This Out My mechanic who specializes in VW ran tests on my instrument cluster and my VSS with his VAG-COM and both passed.
